The DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts proudly announces its Featured Artist for 2019 is DeLand ceramist Carly Gibran. Her work will be featured on the festival poster and T-shirts. Mark your calendars for the unveiling of the official artwork, 5:30-7:30, Thursday September 12 at the historic Athens Theatre.
A whirling dynamo of “get-things-done”, Gibran juggles a professional ceramics studio, an active family life with husband and two young sons, teaching classes and selling her work at festivals and galleries.
She has a long history with the Museum of Art-DeLand, also. She took kids art classes there when it was at the corner of Garfield and New York and later interned at the museum as she completed her degree in art at Stetson.
The story of her path to ceramics is paved with charming anecdotes that she tells with a sense of humor Mark Twain would have loved. She got started in porcelain she says, because as a youthful novice she bought a potters wheel and it came with a 50 pound bag of clay. When asked by the clerk what kind of clay she wanted, she was too embarrassed to admit she knew nothing about clay and so blurted out the only thing she knew - porcelain. Later when she worked with more forgiving stoneware, she realized she had started out with a difficult and temperamental medium.
She prefers porcelain now for its translucency and fine grain. “It feels like cream cheese,” she says. She likes to create works that are light and airy. She received grants early on to study bone china techniques in England.
Gibran’s work is heavily influenced by fiber arts and textile designs. Her mother was an interior designer and Gibran grew up around piles of fabric, templates and patterns – all things that got translated into her ceramics.
Her work is wheel-thrown or hand-built with embellishments carved or impressed into the clay. She uses color sparingly and produces one-of-a-kind works and small editions.
Her work is carried at Arts on Douglas. She teaches adolescents at Casa Montessori and a weekly evening class at Jane’s Art Center in New Smyrna Beach.
