MSDA is a nationally recognized and award-winning organization dedicated to the revitalization, promotion, and preservation of historic downtown DeLand. With a rich history dating back to its establishment, DeLand has long been a hub for local culture, arts, and economic development. MainStreet DeLand’s mission is to foster community pride, boost local businesses, and ensure the economic vitality of the downtown district through events, advocacy, and strategic planning. As a non-profit (501-C-3) corporation, MSDA is dedicated to supporting and enhancing the economic development of downtown while protecting and promoting DeLand’s historic heritage.

Summary of Position

The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for implementing the strategic goals and objectives of MSDA in accordance with the organization’s stated mission and the guidelines established by Florida Main Street and Main Street America. The ED enables the Board to fulfill its governance function, provides leadership in effective administration, and leads the staff and volunteers. The ED is evaluated and receives guidance and direction from the Board President as directed by the Executive Committee. The ED reports monthly updates to the Board of Directors.

Essential Duties and Key Responsibilities:

CRM Management:

  • Maintain CRM/database with accurate business contact information, membership recruitment, and renewal dates

Financial Management:

  • Work with the Organization Committee, Board Treasurer, and Bookkeeper to create and manage the annual budget

  • Ensure fiscal oversight and maintain accurate financial records

  • Oversee the financial aspects of events to ensure profitability and sustainability

Staff Supervision:

  • Provides leadership, support, and guidance to ensure the team is motivated and productive in achieving organizational goals.

Training & Development:

  • Attend Florida Main Street quarterly training programs and report to the Board of Directors

Leadership Meetings:

  • Recurring meetings with Board President, City of DeLand officials, and the various Committees

Annual Action Plan:

  • Work with committees and the Board to create an annual action plan focused on four areas: design, promotion, organization, and economic vitality

Community Involvement:

  • Participate in community organizations, including Florida Main Street, CRA (Community Redevelopment Agency), Team Volusia EDC, DeLand City Commission, and River of Lakes Heritage Corridor

Collaboration:

  • Work with other Main Streets and their Executive Directors to exchange ideas, learn best practices, and foster relationships

Leadership Flexibility:

  • Comfortable working independently, collaborating, and taking direction

Evaluation:

  • The ED is evaluated annually with quarterly benchmarks, goals and/or expectations per the Employee Handbook; review is completed by the Board President

  • Evaluates office staff in accordance with the Employee Handbook

Strategic Leadership & Vision:

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to implement and refine the organization's strategic plan and vision, ensuring alignment with MainStreet America’s Four-Point Approach (Economic Vitality, Design, Promotion, Organization)

  • Foster and lead initiatives that promote DeLand’s downtown as a destination for shopping, dining, and community events

Program & Project Management

  • Oversee the planning, execution, and evaluation of all MSDA programs and projects

  • Maintain a consistent focus on enhancing the economic vitality of downtown DeLand by supporting local businesses and encouraging new business recruitment

Relationship Building & Community Engagement

  • Serve as a key liaison between the MainStreet DeLand Association and the City of DeLand, business owners, property owners, and community leaders

  • Build relationships with downtown merchants and building owners to understand their needs and advocate for their growth and success

Event Planning & Fundraising

  • Organize and oversee all MainStreet events, ensuring each event runs smoothly and supports the downtown economic goals

  • Develop and implement fundraising strategies, including seeking sponsorships, writing grants, and managing donor relations to support the organization’s budget and goals

Public Relations & Marketing

  • Promote MainStreet DeLand through public speaking engagements, media appearances, and digital platforms (website, social media, newsletters)

  • Increase the visibility and awareness of downtown DeLand’s assets, from historic landmarks to modern-day attractions

Volunteers

  • Actively recruit and manage volunteers for committees, events, and projects

Required Education, Experience and Skills:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree with a major in Business Management, Non-Profit Management or related field is required

  • Minimum of three (3) years in a leadership and management role; role in non-profit background preferred but not required

  • Effectively communicate MSDA’s mission, goals, and expectations to staff, board members, merchants, and to the community

  • Proven leadership skills and ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups

  • Strong work ethic, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability

  • Public speaking, community outreach, and financial oversight expertise

  • Technology proficiency, including Google Workspace and CRM management

  • Event coordination experience (small and large scale)

  • An equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered for minimum requirements

Benefit Summary:

  • Two weeks of paid time off (PTO) with an increase of PTO based off of time in service.

  • Eleven (11) paid holidays

  • Based on a 40-hour work week, flex time is available due to additional hours required for events

  • Insurance coverage is not provided

Work Environment/ADA:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time performing repetitive functions. The employee must be able to access file cabinets for filing and retrieving data. The employee must have the ability to sit at a desk and view a screen for extended periods of time. The employee will primarily conduct office work but may work outside in various weather conditions. The employee will be exposed to normal to high noise levels depending on the work environment. The employee may have 20/20 vision or be corrected to 20/100. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
