Oklahoma!, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s first collaboration, transformed musical theatre, creating entirely new expectations for the genre.

Set in a western Native American territory just after the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl play out their love story.  Although the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love’s journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road.

According to Brooks Atkinson of The New York Times, the show's opening number, "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" by itself changed the history of musical theater: “After a verse like that, sung to a buoyant melody, the banalities of the old musical stage became intolerable."

Join the Athens Theatre for our joyous and unforgettable revival of this timeless classic featuring all the beloved tunes including “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,’” “I Can’t Say No,” “People Will Say We’re in Love,” and of course, a rousing rendition of “Oklahoma!”
