Monroe has photographed in Brazil, Israel, England, Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Cuba, India, Trinidad, Poland, Egypt, and several other places. Grants from the National Endowment for the Arts supported Monroe’s 10-year photographic documentation of the endings of the old world Jewry that once characterized Miami’s South Beach. The Fulbright Foundation aided his work throughout Haiti, to where he made twenty five trips, and a Southeast College Arts Conference grant recognized his photographs of tourists who were experiencing that typically American rite of passage – a trip to Disney World, which he visited some 300 times. Many of these works are a part of the current exhibit.

DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts Poster Unveiling

The DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts proudly announces its Featured Artist for 2019 is DeLand ceramist Carly Gibran. Her work will be featured on the festival poster and T-shirts. Mark your calendars for the unveiling of the official artwork, 5:30-7:30, Thursday September 12 at the historic Athens Theatre.

A whirling dynamo of “get-things-done”, Gibran juggles a professional ceramics studio, an active family life with husband and two young sons, teaching classes and selling her work at festivals and galleries.

She has a long history with the Museum of Art-DeLand, also. She took kids art classes there when it was at the corner of Garfield and New York and later interned at the museum as she completed her degree in art at Stetson.

The story of her path to ceramics is paved with charming anecdotes that she tells with a sense of humor Mark Twain would have loved. She got started in porcelain she says, because as a youthful novice she bought a potters wheel and it came with a 50 pound bag of clay. When asked by the clerk what kind of clay she wanted, she was too embarrassed to admit she knew nothing about clay and so blurted out the only thing she knew - porcelain. Later when she worked with more forgiving stoneware, she realized she had started out with a difficult and temperamental medium.

She prefers porcelain now for its translucency and fine grain. “It feels like cream cheese,” she says. She likes to create works that are light and airy. She received grants early on to study bone china techniques in England.

Gibran’s work is heavily influenced by fiber arts and textile designs. Her mother was an interior designer and Gibran grew up around piles of fabric, templates and patterns – all things that got translated into her ceramics.

Her work is wheel-thrown or hand-built with embellishments carved or impressed into the clay. She uses color sparingly and produces one-of-a-kind works and small editions.

Her work is carried at Arts on Douglas. She teaches adolescents at Casa Montessori and a weekly evening class at Jane’s Art Center in New Smyrna Beach.

The unveiling of the DeLand Fall Festival poster featuring Gibran’s work is sponsored by Merrill Lynch – Ogram, Higbee & Associates, DeLand. For more information about the festival’s popular Patron program for art collectors, and sponsorships to support the event which was voted the “Best Florida Outdoor Fine Art Festival, go to www.DeLandFallFestival.com or call the Museum of Art-DeLand at 386-734-4371. The DeLand Fall Festival, a program of the Museum of Art-DeLand, will take place Saturday & Sunday, November 23 and 24 on Woodland Blvd in historic downtown DeLand. Funding and Support Services Provided in Part by The City of DeLand, The Cultural Council of Volusia County, The State of Florida Department of State-Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture.

Building Your Business Group (BYBG) Discussion Meeting

MainStreet DeLand Association is pleased to announce the formation of a very unique small business assistance group.

BYBG will meet twice a month and is specifically for business people who are looking for ideas to help grow their business. A discussion group meeting will occur on the 1st Thursday of the month that will lead us to an educational presentation on the third Thursday.

The BYBG concept is as follows:

Members of this  group will select a short list of challenges, issues and problems that they deal with in their business. Using this  list,  one topic will be selected for each meeting. Members present are each asked to discuss how the topic affects their business and if they have been successful in finding a solution.  (Please be assured that no-one will be asked to discuss proprietary information and solutions will not be open for critique.)

Why is BYBG unique?

The group is not a think tank nor a Mastermind program.  The concept uses the discussion of  individual business experiences, with the goal of helping all businesses in the group to strengthen their practices and grow.

Why is the BYBG so powerful?

Collaborative business improvement helps individual business not only survive but grow.  This is extremely important, as we know 90% of small business is unlikely to survive its first 5 years.  It is in your best interest to have your business neighbors  healthy and open for business.

The Athens Theatre Presents: The Producers

The winner of 12 Tony Awards, more than any other play of any kind, The Producers will invite our audiences to enjoy an over-the-top Broadway musical while laughing uproariously at swishy, egomaniacal actors and directors; unconscionable, money grubbing producers; and the eerily strange world of financing Broadway plays all capped by the unforgettable and uproariously ridiculous “Springtime for Hitler.”  At the Athens Theatre. athensdeland.com
