Sequins, Swagger, and the Soundtrack of a Generation Return to the Athens Theatre
DeLand — The new year begins with a jolt of glam as The Rocket Man Show returns to the Athens Theatre on January 2 and 3 at 7:30 pm, bringing the music, spectacle, and unmistakable spirit of Elton John back to the stage. More than a tribute, this concert experience celebrates one of pop music’s most colorful and enduring icons with flair, authenticity, and heart.
At the helm is international performer Rus Anderson, whose uncanny portrayal of a young Elton John earned him a rare honor: being personally selected by Elton himself as the official body double for the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour’s promotional videos and photography. From the way he attacks the piano to his vocal phrasing and physicality, Anderson captures Elton during his explosive early touring years, when audiences rose to their feet and the rules of rock stardom were being rewritten.
The evening’s setlist spans some of the most beloved songs in popular music, including “Rocket Man,” “Tiny Dancer,” “Your Song,” and “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.” These songs have long lived beyond the radio—woven into road trips, late nights, and personal memories—and hearing them live is part of the magic.
Every note is performed live, with Anderson leading from the piano alongside a full band. No tracks. No shortcuts. Adding to the authenticity are the costumes: several of the elaborate outfits Anderson wears were actually worn by Elton John himself, including pieces from 1973 and his glittering 1984 tuxedo, offering audiences a rare connection to rock history.
The Rocket Man Show has become a consistent favorite with Athens audiences, delivering sold-out performances and joyful, sing-along crowds year after year. Ring in 2026 with music that feels both legendary and deeply personal.
