The West Volusia Historical Society Presents: Conversations at the Conrad.
Born in 1906, Alice Van Cleef lived her entire life in the Glenwood home the uncle built, one room at a time. Her father, Elmer, came to Glenwood from New York and rose to become the manager of Bond Lumber Company. Her mother, Nina Booth Van Cleef, ran the family home and was a talented artist whose beautiful St. Johns River painting hangs in the DeLand House dining room. Alice’s love of learning led her to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in chemistry at Stetson University. Alice was a beloved teacher, spending 42 years teaching chemistry, physics and other science courses at local high schools. Alice is portrayed by Nicki Junkins of DeLand House Players.
The Conrad Center is located at 137 W. Michigan Avenue in DeLand.
