Local History Talk | DeLand Citrus Packinghouses

  • WVHS Conrad Educational & Research Center 137 West Michigan Avenue DeLand, FL, 32720 United States (map)

Between the 1890s and the 1950s, about 25 citrus packinghouses were located in DeLand and fruit was shipped from DeLand’s citrus groves by freight cars, steamboats and trucks. Most were geographically spread along the railroad tracks between Spring Garden Avenue and Printery Park, which today is Painter’s Pond Park. Located primarily in industrial or commercial areas, these buildings were wood frame with large gable roofs and roofline monitors with movable windows to admit natural light and help in the circulation of fresh air.

Presented by WVHS lifetime member Ginger Johnston and Emily Kunkel, City of DeLand Historic Resource Coordinator.

Conrad Educational & Research Center, 137 W Michigan Avenue, DeLand. 6 pm.

Free and open to the public.
