Magnificent Beginnings, Lasting Legacy
As we’ve talked about all year, we’re excited to commemorate a milestone that fills us with pride and gratitude: the 40th anniversary of the MainStreet DeLand Association. Since our founding in 1985, this organization has been at the heart of downtown DeLand’s revitalization — from preserving its historic charm to fostering a vibrant community spirit that continues to flourish.
To celebrate these four decades of progress and connection, join us at our 40th Anniversary Block Party on Friday, September 5, from 4:40 to 8:40 p.m. on West Indiana Avenue. Think neon, think big hair, think air guitar contests and best ’80s attire — because this isn’t just any block party, it’s an ’80s-themed throwback bash with a live DJ, street dancing, and the kind of nostalgic fun only MainStreet DeLand knows how to throw.
This year, we are especially proud to unveil something brand new: the MainStreet Legacy Circle. This Legacy Circle will serve as our very own “hall of fame,” a way to honor individuals and groups whose leadership, vision, and passion shaped downtown DeLand into what it is today. Its purpose is twofold: to preserve the memory of the trailblazers who came before us and to inspire future generations to carry forward the same spirit of innovation, collaboration, and community pride. After all, you can’t preserve what you don’t honor.
Our first inductees set the standard. We proudly introduce the Magnificent 7, the visionary leaders who made up MainStreet DeLand’s original executive board in 1985:
● Richard Kelton (Government Consultant), President
● Jim West (Stetson Flower), Vice President
● Donna Lutz (Realtor), Secretary
● Michael (Mick) Aleno (Florida Bank), Treasurer
● Steve Burley (Volusia/Lake/Flagler Private Industry Council)
● Jim Stepp (Stepp Office Supply)
● John Gregory (Feasel’s Paint and Glass)
The Magnificent 7 were more than just a committee — they, along with Dal Ritchey, Sid Corhern, Chuck McMahan, and Allan Cajacob, were visionaries at a pivotal moment in DeLand’s history. In the mid-1980s, downtown was struggling: historic buildings were at risk of demolition, storefronts were empty, and many had written the area off as a place of the past. But these seven individuals saw something different. They believed DeLand’s downtown wasn’t finished — it was just waiting to be rediscovered.
Pooling together their diverse backgrounds — banking, retail, real estate, government, and industry — they laid the foundation for what would become one of Florida’s most vibrant Main Street programs. They advocated for preservation when it wasn’t popular, invested time and resources when success wasn’t guaranteed, and built partnerships that continue to define our work today. Their vision was simple yet bold: restore the heart of DeLand, and the rest will follow.
And while their vision was serious, their first steps showed the scrappy, creative spirit that still defines us today. Their very first fundraiser? A watermelon seed spitting contest right on the streets of downtown. It wasn’t glamorous, but it worked—and more importantly, it drew the community together with fun, laughter, and purpose. That same grassroots energy is what has fueled MainStreet DeLand ever since.
Forty years later, their fingerprints are everywhere—from the preserved storefronts on Woodland Boulevard to the thriving shops, restaurants, and festivals that make downtown DeLand the cultural centerpiece of West Volusia. Their courage to dream, organize, and act is the reason we’re able to celebrate this anniversary today.
As we come together on September 5, it’s more than a party—it’s a tribute. It’s about celebrating the bold steps taken by the Magnificent 7, establishing the Legacy Circle to honor those who follow in their footsteps, and recommitting ourselves to the work of building a downtown that future generations will treasure.
And the celebrations don’t end there! September is packed with community events you won’t want to miss:
● On Thursday, September 19, Stetson University and MainStreet DeLand will team up for HatterFest, a community-wide pep rally on W. Indiana Avenue to cheer on the Hatters as they prepare to take on Harvard the next day. Expect music, games, and plenty of green and white as the whole town comes together to rally behind our hometown team.
● On Saturday and Sunday, September 27–28, we’ll welcome thousands of visitors to the 26th Annual DeLand Craft Show, where over 150 crafters and artists will line the streets with creativity and handmade talent. We’re proud to continue this tradition of finely curated handmade goods that was started by our very own Merchant, Sandy Chavez, owner of Lace & Accessories.
Carry on the Legacy
The story of downtown DeLand is still being written, and there’s a role for everyone. You can carry on the Legacy by supporting local businesses, attending events, or getting directly involved with the MainStreet DeLand Association. Consider becoming a member, donating to support programs and projects, volunteering at events or in our office, or sponsoring one of our initiatives. Every act — big or small — helps preserve the charm, vibrance, and sense of community that the Magnificent 7 envisioned forty years ago. Together, we ensure that DeLand’s Main Street remains a place where history, culture, and community continue to thrive.
Here’s to honoring the past, celebrating today, and shaping the next 40 years of MainStreet magic — together.
See you Downtown.
