Key to creating a dynamic place is knowing what is there and what is at risk. A vast amount of Florida properties can now be considered potential heritage assets and are located in harm’s way because of increased flood hazard. These properties are often located in areas not previously recognized as historic, or are in historic downtowns and have aged into potential eligibility. Local governments are facing the challenge of how to identify and assess thousands of structures before many of these resources are lost or damaged due to environmental threats. This session examines some of the innovative methods used in Pinellas County communities to develop a strategy for identifying and prioritizing these resources for current and future projects, including heritage resource surveys, adaptation and resiliency planning, and adaptive reuse potential.
